Dental Hygiene Month: How Our Hygienists Protect Your Smile and Your Whole-Body Health

Dental Hygiene Month: How Our Hygienists Protect Your Smile and Your Whole-Body Health

Your hygienist is more than the person who cleans your teeth. They’re your partner in lifelong health.

October is a special time in the dental world, a month dedicated to celebrating the unsung heroes of oral health: our dental hygienists! At The Smile Place Family Dentistry, we are thrilled to recognize Dental Hygiene Month!! This is a perfect opportunity to shine a spotlight on the incredible work our dental hygienists do every single day, not just in cleaning your teeth, but in empowering you with the knowledge and tools to maintain a healthy smile for life.

Celebrating Our Dedicated Dental Hygienists

We love our dental hygienists and want to thank them for the amazing work they do for you at The Smile Place! Our team of dental hygienists works every day to share their knowledge, raise awareness, and keep you in good oral health. They are the frontline defenders against plaque, tartar, and gum disease, and their expertise is invaluable to our patients’ well-being.

Our hygienists are more than just skilled professionals; they are compassionate educators and trusted partners in your health journey. They take the time to understand your unique needs, answer your questions, and provide personalized advice on everything from proper brushing and flossing techniques to dietary recommendations that impact your oral health. Patients like Patty L. have experienced this firsthand, noting, “The dental hygienist, Nicole, was wonderful. She took her time and exhibited true pride in her work”. This testimonial highlights the dedication and caring approach that defines our hygienist team.

The Crucial Link: Oral Health and Overall Wellness

Our team cares deeply for each and every one of our patients. We care about your overall health and encourage that you see all your medical professionals, and that includes visiting the dentist!! This isn’t just a recommendation; it’s a fundamental principle of modern healthcare. The mouth is often called the “gateway to the body,” and the state of your oral health can provide significant clues about your general health.

Neglecting your oral hygiene can lead to more than just cavities. Poor oral health has been linked to a variety of systemic conditions, including:

  • Heart Disease: Bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation and hardening of the arteries.
  • Diabetes: There’s a bidirectional relationship between diabetes and gum disease; each can make the other worse.
  • Respiratory Infections: Inhaling bacteria from infected teeth and gums can lead to lung infections.
  • Pregnancy Complications: Gum disease has been associated with premature birth and low birth weight.
  • Dementia: Some research suggests a link between poor oral health and cognitive decline.

By maintaining regular dental visits, you’re not just protecting your teeth; you’re taking a proactive step towards safeguarding your entire body. Our hygienists play a vital role in identifying early signs of potential issues, both oral and systemic, and guiding you toward optimal health.

The Power of Prevention: Your Bi-Annual Cleaning

We encourage our patients to come in and see our dental hygienists for a cleaning 2x a year. Have you seen one of our wonderful dental hygienists within the last 6 months? If not, book your appointment today. They can’t wait to see you!

These biannual visits are far more than just a quick polish. They are a cornerstone of preventive dental care and offer numerous benefits:

What Happens During a Professional Cleaning (Prophy)?

A dental cleaning, also called oral prophylaxis, involves removing dental plaque and tartar (calculus) from the teeth using specialized instruments, followed by polishing for a complete clean. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Initial Assessment: Your hygienist will first examine your mouth for any signs of gum disease, cavities, or other concerns.
  2. Tartar Removal (Scaling): Using an ultrasonic device that emits vibrations and is cooled by water, larger pieces of tartar are loosened. Next, smaller deposits are manually removed with hand tools. Tartar is hardened plaque that cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone, making professional removal essential.
  3. Polishing: After removing all tartar and plaque from the tooth surfaces, the teeth are polished to complete the cleaning process. This smooths the tooth surface, making it harder for plaque to adhere.
  4. Fluoride Treatment (Optional): A fluoride treatment may be applied to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities.
  5. Oral Hygiene Education: Your hygienist will provide personalized tips and demonstrations on how to improve your at-home brushing and flossing techniques.

Beyond Routine Cleanings: Scaling and Root Planing

For patients with more advanced gum disease, our hygienists also perform Scaling and Root Planing. This non-surgical treatment involves removing plaque and calculus from below the gum line using specialized dental instruments in a process called scaling. Afterward, the tooth’s roots are smoothed through planning to support gum healing and attachment to a clean surface. This deeper cleaning is crucial for managing periodontal disease and preventing further bone loss.

The Smile Place Difference: Personalized Care You Can Trust

At The Smile Place Family Dentistry, we believe that great dental care doesn’t just make for a fantastic smile; it also helps promote overall health and wellness. We want you to have the confidence to share your smile with the world.

As a locally-owned private dental practice, we take the time to get to know you—because you’re more than just a chart number. Unlike corporate dental chains, you’ll consistently see the same trusted faces at every visit, not a rotating staff or a different dentist every time. We tailor every treatment to your unique needs, with no cookie-cutter care here, focusing on your comfort, health, and long-term smile goals.

Our commitment to personalized, compassionate care is echoed by our patients:

  • Richard Rossi praises, “The Smile Place is a wonderful facility, staffed by friendly, caring professionals providing excellent dental treatments of all types”.
  • Alix P. highlights, “The SmilePlace team always makes sure your time there is both a comfortable and positive experience”.
  • Guy S. notes, “The care was excellent and everyone made you feel comfortable right from the start. I don’t think you can get better dental care anywhere”.
  • Jacob, who had a fear of dentists, shared, “My entire experience at The SmilePlace was excellent… I’ve been to many dentists and have always been scared but not anymore. I will never go anywhere else – this place is amazing. Everyone is super nice”.

Our team of doctors, including Dr. David Rothstein, Dr. Jay D. Kim (Oral Surgeon), Dr. Kellie Schlosser, and Dr. David Teitelbaum, work hand-in-hand with our hygienists to provide a comprehensive range of services, from Comprehensive Evaluations / Oral Examinations to Whitening, Crowns, Dental Implants, and Wisdom Teeth Removal (3rd Molars).
